The iconic bat. The heritage. The legendary 150+ year journey into what is today the top-selling rum brand in the world. Bacardi, which is also the largest family-owned spirits company in the world, has its origins in Cuba, but has been inextricably linked to Puerto Rico's own rum making tradition since 1936 when the Bacardi Corporation was established in San Juan. In 1958 a new Bacardi Distillery was built in the town of Cataño, just across the bay from Old San Juan, and to this day it's still the largest premium rum distillery in the world. The brand's pioneering spirit is evidenced since its beginnings, having created the first mixable rum and launching an entire cocktail culture. Today, the legend of the bat lives on in their full lines of mixable, flavored and aged rums, all lovingly produced in Puerto Rico.
Located in the southern town of Ponce, Don Q's Serrallés distillery is commonly referred to as the birthplace of Puerto Rican rum. It was established in 1865 and to this day is the island's second largest distillery, producing one of the most popular rum brands in Puerto Rico. The Don Q manufacturing process is characterized by a multiple distillation system and carbon-active filtration which produces clean and pure rum. The artisan aging in American white oak casks and careful blending are exclusive recipes of the Serrallés family that have been perfected through six generations. Don Q rums are also unique in that they are the only rums made in Puerto Rico to be certified kosher. Also in 2016 they released the first single barrel product produced at the island. The Don Q brands, are a portfolio of premium rums with distinctive bouquets and perfect balance, are quite sought after by all those who try them.
Since 1880, Ron del Barrilito has been a standard for Puerto Rico's premium aged artisanal rum tradition. Developed by Mr. Pedro F. Fernández, its secret formula is similar to the style of French brandies and cognacs, creating smooth and mellow rum that connoisseurs treasure. For over 100 years, the Fernández family has manufactured “Ron del Barrilito” at the same place of origin, using the same name, formula and aging process. Ron del Barrilito is available in two varieties: Ron del Barrilito 2 Stars, aged 3 years in charred oak barrels ideal for mixed drinks and Ron del Barrilito 3 Stars, is a blend of rums aged from 6 to 10 years in charred oak barrels that have smooth mellow flavor. Both have the same formula, aged in but differs in aging period.
Ron Caray, which literally means "heck" in English, was born in 1915 on a rum distillery in the lush foothills of El Yunque rainforest. It was very popular in Puerto Rico until 1942, when the U.S. government diverted molasses production to other purposes due to WWII, forcing the distillery to shut down. Today, the third generation of the family has resumed production right next to its original brick chimney and boiler structures, testaments to the history of this unique quality rum. Caray is available in three types: Reserva del Artesano, an extraordinary golden sipping rum, Platinum, an extra light and dry white rum perfect for cocktail mixing and the innovating extravagant coffee rum.
One of the newer brands of Rums of Puerto Rico, Ron Caliche is a super- premium white rum destilled five times for clarity and purity. Caliche Rum is the product of the collaboration between iconic, sixth-generation rum maker Roberto Serrallés and Rande Gerber and entertainment industry businessman. Some white rums are not aged, but Caliche is a masterful blend of rums aged from 3 to 5 years in American white oak barrels and a portion of rums aged up to 20 years in the Solera Process (3 stacked layers of barrels) which add a particular character aroma and depth. The rum is then filtered to remove color and impurities. The result, is a white rum made for rum lovers, with balance, body and smoothness.
A small, family-owned liquor manufacturing and distribution company from Puerto Rico, Trigo produces three distinct rums since the 1980s. Ron Cañita Artesanal Alambique, one of the first legal, clandestine moonshine-style rums made in the island, packs a unique punch of spice and flavor. Ron Bugalú is a flavored coconut rum that brings a Caribbean flair to any cocktail. And finally, Trigo Reserva Artesanal, an ultra-premium that's a blend of Puerto Rican rums aged up to ten years in American oak barrels with a few secret ingredients added to give it a bold flavor and bouquet.
Another newcomer to the Rums of Puerto Rico family, Club Caribe is a distillery established in 2013 in the mountain town of Cidra focused on making a wide variety of flavored rums. From banana and coconut to raspberry and citrus, Club Caribe's rums are perfect for cocktail creations. In 2015 they released their white rum, aged one year in American oak barrel under the name Club Caribe Silver.
